I wrote to you a few weeks ago about the situation in Darfur. The escalating crisis is now a disaster scenario for the people of this war-plagued region of Sudan.

Plan is well-placed to help. We are expanding our work, but we urgently need your support to save lives and ensure that thousands of children and their families survive this worsening crisis.

Over the past several weeks, renewed fighting in Darfur has sent 32,000 more people into the crowded camps. With so many aid organizations recently forced to suspend operations, pressure is on Plan to stretch already strained resources to help more people.

Every day, recently, I think about a ten-year-old girl I met in Darfur who told me that her greatest dream is to get bigger quickly so that she, instead of her mother, can make the dangerous trip to collect firewood outside the camp. Like many children, this little girl worries about losing her mother forever. But for her, that danger is real and imminent.

These children, caught up in a nightmare, are still indomitable – they are the generation that will help Darfur recover. With help for these children today, there is tremendous hope for Darfur tomorrow. War does end, and reconstruction will come.

We must help these children survive. Your gift today will support Plan’s efforts to deliver the following critical services:

• Water pumps and storage containers to reduce the outbreak of waterborne diseases and provide safe access to water within the camps
  
• Life-saving medical care including medicine and supplies, first aid kits, oral re-hydration packages, and emergency obstetric services
  
• Proper sanitation and latrines to reduce the spread of deadly diseases
  
• Basic education so children can have a sense of normalcy in the camps
  
• Counseling and support for children who have been traumatized and harmed by the war.

The situation is worsening right now, but there is hope. Our teams in Darfur are committed to getting children and families through this new crisis. You can help this life-saving work continue.
